Who Is Your Local Hero?
WeDoTrades.co.uk and 96.3 Radio Aire want to find Leeds Local Heroes and Heroines and we need your help to do that! We want you to tell us about the people you meet everyday, who do normal jobs, have families and maybe even a pet too, but somehow still find the time to give something back to the community.
It doesn't have to be someone who raises millions for charity or does daredevil stunts either, it could be Mrs. Smith from up the street who has given up hours of her free time over the years to help run the local guide group.
This week's West Yorkshire Local Hero with WeDoTrades.co.uk is Lorraine Fraser Lorraine tragically lost her son Tyrone, 16. He died after being attacked by a gang of youths in Beeston in April 2004. Tyrone was stabbed three times and badly beaten with makeshift weapons including baseball bats, poles and planks of wood as well as being CS gased.
Lorraine has worked tirelessly ever since to raise awareness of knife crime and to reduce the risk of violence on our streets, she works closely with the Royal Armouries in Leeds who power the Campaign NTK (NO TO KNIVES). Lorraine also helps with weapons awareness courses which aim to change attitudes and educate people about the dangers of carrying knives. Lorraine very recently set up a none profitable constitution called Tyrone's memorial project so she can do more work with young people and help prevent further loss.
Lorraine does all this work to try prevent what happened to her son happening to anyone else, she gets no funding for the work she does other than the reward of hopefully changing our children's opinions on carrying weapons and helping to prevent another unnecessary death. If I could reward Lorraine my self I would set her up with an office and equipment in her spare so she can organise her work better and help more people than she already does.
Radio Aire and WeDoTrades.co.uk are going to give Lorraine an office to continue her hard work and Dean and Chris are going to be doing the work for her. See more of their work here...
